My (European) diesel from '87 also has the "ashtray" knob.

There is one annoying thing about the cable: sometimes you can pull the knob smoothly, at other times I'm afraid to pull out the cable (and the trim) with it. When you disconnect the cable form the pump, the lever can be moved with hardly any resistance, so its all in the cable.

Any tips on lubricating it? I already tried teflon spray, after I pulled out the inner cable totally, but it didn't help much :-( Also no extreme bends in the cable.

By the way, as far as I know the glow plugs stay on some time after engaging the starter. So for that reason you don't have to engage the starting longer.
