Brian,
Some of the Subie converters have had issues to deal with.  Some have not.
I have 30,000 miles on mine and I haven't done anything but change the oil
and pass people.  I have a '95 2.2L and I'm quite happy with it.  I live in
Phoenix.  My Westy has taken trips to Baja, Colorado, California and
multiple trips to an area of Mexico where Phoenicians vacation called Rocky
Point.  It's fun to drive the hills on the way to Telluride passing folks in
cars and trucks.  I rarely drive more than 70 MPH but I don't slow down for
hills.  I realize that conversions aren't for everyone but a bunch of us are
happy with our choices.
