Not me. I wait for the glow plugs to go out! Don't yours go out when they are fully hot? The '89 is tied to the coolant temp sensor at the head. If the coolant is warm--they won't come on at all. I have heard some people cycle them twice in very cold weather. I have not had any problems, but in Delaware, extreme cold is rare. A few times it has been in the teens (F). Good battery is essential, but I am using the same size Interstate that is in my Westy.

The glow plugs are on during cranking by design. I've seen references to this in a few different places, so it's not just mine that does it. ;) This is one of the reasons it's important to have a good battery in a diesel -- during cranking you're powering 48 amps worth of glow plugs as well as the starter.
