Jeff, One good reason for removing the fluid before starting the job is to prevent the old fluid from entering your brake and clutch system. Always flush fresh fluid through the system. I need to replace my clutch master cylinder sometime soon, and most of the outlines I've seen for this procedure involve messing around with your mother's turkey baster to empty the brake/clutch fluid reservoir. This sounds kinda sloppy and time-consuming.

Hoping this job turns out better than my last Thanksgiving Day dinner, I am wondering if anyone else has made use of a hose-pinching device to prevent the fluid from draining from the reservoir while working on the MC? I saw one in the auto-parts store but am confident I can improvise one using a Vice-Grips and a couple sections of a split 1/2-inch wooden dowel to prevent damage to the rubber hose. Kind of a large-scale hemostat.

Seems like this would allow a mere teaspoon or so of fluid to drain out while doing the MC swap, and would mean less air in the system to bleed out later.

Thoughts?
