This might be the argrument to buy you time. It would be a shame to dump
the van, only to discover the need for a replacement vehicle. (Her car to
get to school, your car or van to get to work.)
However, keeping cars for emotional reasons is a luxury. If you can't
afford that luxury, then...you can't afford it. Your wife's reasons for not
wanting the van are all valid.
Anyway...stall. Hope that you get a job that required you to use the van.
Find another way to get some cash. Any relatives you can borrow from? Any
trustworthy relatives you can "sell" the van to, with the understanding that
you can buy it back when you have the means?

I envy you that.

One thing you have not thought of. What if you want to go one
way and she wnats to go the other? I've seen friends buy a vehicle
together, only to be enemies all to soon, because of this. What is
this relationship anyway? If you are married and the total milage
of both vehicles is less than 10,000 / year you might get away
with one vehicle. If you are anything less than married, you
just should not do this.
