Look at the lugholes to see of they are ballseat or conical seat. The stud do not necessarily need full coverage as long as you have the requisite 7.5 complete turns for full engagement.

You mention that it has the "alloy nuts". I assume you mean it has the conical seat lugnuts usuallly used on factory Vanagon alloys. But you did not mention if you have a 2wd or a Syncro. As you are probably already aware, stock 2wd Vanagons use bolts up front. The ones used for Vanagon alloy wheels are long enough to accomodate most wheels.
