Tim, the handle on my 88 GL is held in place with a single screw opposite the crank handle end. The screw is under a plastic cover. To remove the screw to remove the handle, simply lift the cover at the big end. The plastic is flexible enough to be lifted up. There may be other types, but that is how it works on my van.

Don't know about the other stuff you asked about.
