Andrew, Hi!!!

I can't help with the whelk thing, but I have a question.

I collected a few fossil specimens in my years in Alaska, and one of my
prizes is a 4 foot 4-6 inch diameter piece of wooly mammoth tusk that
weighs about 50 or  so pounds.  This tusk was not dug from rock but from
mucky sand and silt. It is not badly decomposed, but fairly preserved.

Have you any suggestions as to how best to preserve it, prevent the
growth rings of the tusk from shucking off.

I know that ivory carver would give thier souls to get their hands on
this piece, but I will not part with it. There is a personal story
behind it for me, as I am sure the Wooly Mammoth had one, too.
