Further to all how were interested in the final analysis of this problem. I took the van to a shop near by that could analyse the coolant for exhaust gases. Well, all of you who were suggesting that it was a combustion leak were right and my "Associate" who thought it was a water pump leak was wrong. Customer....well he's not too happy now trying do decide whether or not to throw more money at this van to have the motor hauled out and repaired. I guess the good part is that it saved the disappointment of finding the same problem still existed after changing the water pump, a real PITA on the 1.9s. This van may go up for sale.......he was thinking $8000 CND yesterday when I spoke with him. It's and '84 Westy, Escatorial Green, automatic, in really fine shape all around except for the combustion leak ! Stay tuned and thanks for all the input that prompted me to have the coolant analysis done. BTW, they did not use a sniffer but took a sample of the coolant and used some type of chemical analysis device which I was told is sold by Snap-On. One more gadget I will have to buy.

Cheers
