It sounds to me like a combination of the infamous Vanagon headlight switch, (that's why there is so much info in the archives about the installation of the relay) which overheats and goes out, and the ignition switch. I've had this same thing happen twice while out on the road on long night trips, on high beam when they've gone out. The only way to continue was to hold the bright lever back. Don't know of a quick fix but can say, don't be too surprised if your lights become usable again on this same trip. Mine did so I left the low beams on and they got me from Vail, CO back to Salt Lake no problemo.
