I don't want to rub it in but you should always manually turn a crank pulley around a few times before buying or installing. If the eBay seller auctioned a bad motor and said it was good, then that is grounds for his investigation by ebay.

Check with eBay to see what they will do and what the protection poilicy will cover. Try to work it out with the seller as he may not know much about engines and should at least refund your purchase price.

If he refuses to refund make sure to leave a warning in his feedback so the rest of us can avoid him if he sells more bad Vanagon engines.

Hello all, Here's the latest update on my replacement engine saga.... My mechanic got the 1.9L engine installed and low and behold -- its locked up tighter than a drum so to speak! So now I'm still without an good engine after going through all of this hassle and most of our savings accounts.

So if anyone has got a good 2.1L engine available, I'm still needing one. I really need to get this van back on the road as inexpensively as possible. I had thought that buying this engine would save me a bunch of money, however as it is now it's done nothing but cost me a lot of money that we couldn't afford to waste and I'm not any further ahead than when I started. I've checked around with the salvage yards and no one has any Vanagons, let alone 2.1L engines out of an '86 or newer.

The reason I'm also posting this to the Subaru & engine conversion lists in case one of you might have a good 2.1L engine for sale. My apologies if you get this request more than once. Thanks, Anthony Bailey
