Subject: what happens if you install a cv joint backwards
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed

yep; that's right. this simple job is starting to turn into more of an epic. well, my new axle bolts came from cafe volks today so i went to put my repaired axle back in. i followed the instructions in the tech on cafe volks web page and took the cv joints apart to pack them with grease... maybe you can do a better job that way, but i sure made a mess putting packed joints back onto the axle.

well anyway, after i got done putting everything together and installing it (which turns out to be pretty hard without a second person), i went to retorque the nuts on the *other* axle, the one that my mechanic friend helped me with a couple weeks ago... as i was working, i realized that he had installed the cv joints BACKWARDS from the way that article says to do it with the grove on the outer ball hub facing away from the axle.

so my question: how bad is this?? do i need to make him take those off and put them on with the groove on the outside? or will they be alright that way.... at least until i feel like repacking them. i've already driven four or five hundred miles on that axle and i took a quick test drive today and all my rear-end clunking was gone.

Ben.
