Steven, thought i'd chime in as I'm fairly well versed in the vanagon diesels.. I have 3 (2 good rebuilds and 1 parts to get the 2 going) since my earliest search for knowledge in these rare VW's initially i bought a solitary diesel tranny for too much $$ to make my baja a TD, but didn't know about the other unique parts necessary to mate the powerplants and that the vanagons were sideshift..

the stock Vanagon diesel arrangement is a entire new bellhousing that bolts to the body of the transaxle. the oil pan is completely unique as is the pick-up tube for the oil pump. pump is same or can be used on other I4 pumps w/little effort the motor mounts are LARGE arms of cast aluminum that reach out and catch 2 tubeular mounts going front-rear across the eng9ine bay

the bellhousing isn't something you can easily repoduce, it's not as simple/clean as a Kennedy adapter.(which I have one of those as well) also note that the VW TDI is a fly-by-wire system and has no solid (cable) linkage between the pedal and the throttle(injection pump) it runs by the computer. they can be changed over to a standard 1.9D pump though but i don't know much about that have to research more

I can understand that you want to retain stock decklid height and a 50` angle is the only way to do that.. but i fear you are going to have to locate the actuall Diesel parts These parts are all UNIQUE to the diesel vanagon engine Bellhousing starter transmission input shaft flywheel oil pan oil pump pick-up tube motor mounts aluminum and tubular and possibly the pressurized overflow bottle. an Exhaust manifold that will clear the diesel alum motor mounts

Now if you make an engine adapter one I've been looking for that isn't like the kennedy one (KEP uses custom flywheel and stock starter) I'm looking for an adapter that mounts the starter on the backside of the motor in the FOX/Quantum/Audi configuration and allows use of stock flywheel, it mounts in the upright 15` angle though and you would have to fabricate a engine lid and motor mounts. but i'm looking to put my quantum turbo diesel in my baja bug *wicked grin

there are a few diesel vanagons on EB*Y and www.thesamba.com from time to time at reasonable prices.. keep alert check often and be prepared to pounce on a good deal.

Ohh and i noticed you have a syncro ... the diesel bellhousing mounts the starter on the TOP where your gas tank is.. I'm not sure how (though i know it's been done) they'd fit together.. just food for thought.

Feel free to contact me w/questions Dan

I am revving up for my TDI conversion project. I plan on doing the 50deg mount as in the stock Vanagon diesel. I need a stock diesel adaptor plate for use as a template to design a custom adaptor plate I'll be machining. Anyone have one of these things laying around that they'd like to sell cheap? It doesn't have to be in perfect condition.

Thanks!
