I just went through trying to get RV insurance on my vanagon a couple weeks ago...

ended up that I wasn't able to make it happen.

I talked w/4 different companies: Progressive, GMAC, and 21st Century, and State Farm

All of their policies are a little different, but mostly it came down to two issues:

1. you need to have a "plumbed" water system in place which feeds atleast a toilet, but preferably also a shower. 2. If the vanagon is your only vehicle, it makes it much more difficult to convince them that you actually use it as a motor home only.

also, porta-potties don't qualify as an acceptable toilet.

i ended up staying w/progressive auto insurance...and when i payed the 6-month term in full, the guy on the phone told me he could give me the "paid in full" discount. I said, "great, how much is that?". he said, "oh, wait a minute, we don't offer it to California residents..." When i asked why, he said he didnt know, but that he was pissed about it too because he lives in Sacramento!

the insurance industry is rediculous...there are no set standards, except for what your state minimums are.

This is just my experience, and i know that people have gotten their campers covered by RV insurance before...but i have a feeling that if you have other vehicles, the companies are much more willing to help you out.

cheers, it's almost friday!
