The port in picture #1 goes to the brake booster. There should also be a check valve there. The part on the manifold in picture #2 is the EGR valve. A pipe connects there, goes to a filter/cooler under the left side tin, (which is missing), and then connects to the exhaust system. Proper functioning of the EGR system is extremely critical for these engines as it lowers the peak flame temperatures thus reducing both NOx and burned valves and heads. That valve thing with the 2 big hoses is the "deceleration" valve. Its purpose is to slightly bypass the throttle when decelerating with the throttle close. This ensures adequate air for combustion. The water cooled vans eliminated the need for this by simply turning the injectors off during closed throttle decel. One hose goes to the air intake boot and the other goes to a tee connection on the auxiliary air regulator.

Hope this helps! Dennis

Ok, two questions on a 82 Vanagon with a 2.0L Type 4 engine I'm piecing back together (I was given the van.)

1. What am I missing in these two pictures:

http://www.iamjeremy.com/van1.JPG The area is circled. Something defiantly connects to this. I think it connects to the hose circled in green on the second picture as this hose goes no where.

http://www.iamjeremy.com/van2.JPG The red circle - something looks like it's just missing.

2. I have put back on a piston and 2 jugs and the head etc. With the coil disconnected and the dist cap off, I tried to crank the engine to get oil in the case (get the oil light to go off.) But when I do, The starter goes CLONK but doesn't turn the engine over. The battery is good, even tried a different battery and tried it with my 50A quick charger connected and on. Voltage on the battery is 12v and drops to 9.7v when the starter goes CLONK. Any ideas here?

Thank You! Jeremy
