Sounds like a PITA way to do it. This is what I do with great success.

1 Spray CV bolts with Wurth's Rost Off and let is soak in. 2 Take the pointy bit on my Swiss Tool and clean out the head of the bolt 3 Insert the Allen socket (older style) or 8mm triple square socket (newer style) and give it a good sharp whack with a heavy hammer 4 Use a cheap impact gun on the lowest setting and TIGHTEN the bolts for about 1 second 5 With the gun on a +- 50lb setting remove each bolt

I think the tightening part is important. It get the heads pre-stressed in the opposite direction and breaks free any rust that might be holding the bolt in place. The hammering of the impact gun insures that the socket is always deeply inserted in the bolt. With this method I never have a problem with the newer style bolts, and very seldom with the older style. If there is a problem - it's nothing that drilling the head of the bolt can't fix.

Here's my suggestion:

1) Buy an impact driver. $10. You'll wonder how you lived without it.

2) Use a Dremel type tool (if you have one) to cut a slot in the top of the bolt, to make the bolt look like a slotted screw top.

3) Stick the impact driver in the slot you just made and hammer away!

(Is there enough room for an impact driver and a hammer?)

4) If that doesn't work you can just cut off the head with the dremel, then grind a new slot in the remainder after the axle is out. Then there will definitely be enough room for a hammer.

PS - I believe you can buy this socket from Lisle dealers.
