Sure, a transformer type charger works the same...if you don't mind listening to a transformer going "BZZZZZZZZZZ" all night while you camp. ;)

You're right that this doesn't make much sense if you have to buy a PC power supply to make one, but a lot of us probably have (or know someone who has) an old computer or two lying around by now.
