My dad would always keep two sets of rims for the rear tires. One with studded snows, the other with "highway' tires. In the winter the studded snows would stay on the car and the 'summer' tires and rims with carefully installed steel chains, would go in the trunk. If we needed chains, he just pulled over and changed the rear rims!

I think chains work MUCH better, however thy are harder on the tires, harder to install properly, and more likely to do body damage if not installed properly.
