Anthony,

It is a bit unusual that a mechanic would install a used engine without at least checking to see that it turned over by hand. Have you asked him about that, and if it really is frozen wasn't there some kind of guarantee that came with it? I'm not clear if you now have 2 1.9L engines and/or if the frozen one is the one sent by mistake instead of a 2.1L or a different one you purchased somewhere else. But make sure it's really frozen...a vendor would really have to be dishonest and stupid to send you a locked up engine. That would be fraud ( fraud: any act, expression, omission, or concealment calculated to deceive another to his or her disadvantage ) and that would open him up to criminal prosecution.

You should also check with EBAY to see what control they have over their vendor for this kind of situation...I'm sure they have rules that they expect the vendors to follow. Also, when I had a problem with EBAY fraud I contacted the police department in the vendor's city and since I wasn't the only one with the same problem, they assigned a detective to the situation and eventually we all had our money returned. If you paid for one item, and received a different one, or if you paid for a working item and received a non working one, and can prove it.. then it's worth looking for some leverage from anyplace you can find it.

Hope I've got this right, I didn't read your original posts. I know that at a minimum if the mechanic didn't check the engine before installing it, he shouldn't be charging you for the installation or removal. And make sure, as someone else said, it's not a flywheel with zero endplay, or a starter stuck in the thrown out position, etc...

John

Hello all, Here's the latest update on my replacement engine saga.... My mechanic got the 1.9L engine installed and low and behold -- its locked up tighter than a drum so to speak! So now I'm still without an good engine after going through all of this hassle and most of our savings accounts.

So if anyone has got a good 2.1L engine available, I'm still needing one. I really need to get this van back on the road as inexpensively as possible. I had thought that buying this engine would save me a bunch of money, however as it is now it's done nothing but cost me a lot of money that we couldn't afford to waste and I'm not any further ahead than when I started. I've checked around with the salvage yards and no one has any Vanagons, let alone 2.1L engines out of an '86 or newer.

The reason I'm also posting this to the Subaru & engine conversion lists in case one of you might have a good 2.1L engine for sale. My apologies if you get this request more than once. Thanks, Anthony Bailey
