He must have looked up "Volvo" instead of "Volkswagen" in his installation
rate book. Most Volvos have an amplifier under the dash that has to be
wired-around when installing an aftermarket stereo. I just went
round-and-round with Best Buy on this with my daughter's '90 740.

Uh, I don't recall any "VW supplied amplifier under the speedometer
console,"
just the brake/clutch reservoir, fuses, and the steering column. The
factory
setup was the Heidelburg(sp?) head unit powering four speakers, so unless
the
PO put in an amp, I'd say your installer is mistaken. I _have_ heard of
people securing amps to the front crush beam, behind the glovebox ...
Your lack of sound / buzziness from some speakers may just be loose
connections at the wiring harness -- lift up the ashtray and check the
connection between your wiring harness and the four leads running to the
speakers.
Best,
d.
