Damon,
I too had the persistent lifter noise on a recently rebuilt 1.9L. After
about 5000 miles on the rebuild the lifters started to make noise. I
changed the oil and Mann filter (fourth oil change) and the noise went away
for about 1500 miles. Since the engine was under warranty, I took it to the
shop and they adjusted the rockers, changed the oil/filter and the noise
went away. About 1500 miles later the same thing happened. I repeated the
process as did the shop. The third time it happened the rebuilder pulled
the engine and discovered that the cam had gone flat on one lobe. The
lifter had worn through the face and had a hole that would not let the
lifter pump up. The rebuilder honored the warranty and rebuilt the engine
for just the price of the camshaft. All labor and other parts including a
new set of lifters were absorbed by the shop. I've put about 2000 miles on
the most recent rebuild with no further trouble with the lifters. There is
a small oil leak from the main seal which the shop says they will take care
of at no additional charge. The owner of the shop must hate to see me
driving in. I don't think he has made a dime on my rebuild, especially
since he has to r and r the engine again. All the rework has been done
without the slightest protest on his part or prodding on mine. He has
really stood behind his work. The shop was recommended to me by the PO of
my Westy and by other accounts is a first quality shop. This job seems to
be just a real thorn in both of our sides. I hope you have better luck with
your lifter problem.

Subject: Clacky new(ish) lifter?
One of the few persistent problems i've been having
with my new engine is that one of the lifters just
keeps tick-tick-ticking away. I have all new german
lifters, a re-ground cam, and then re-used the
pushrods and rockers (but made sure to put them back
in their same locations/orientations). I'm currently
running straight 30w, but am going to move to 20-50
very soon.
I've tried adjusting them per bently, .006" clearance,
and even 2 1/4 turns in. I've also tried using some
marvel mystery oil (only half a bottle, though). None
of these have really made any difference...
Can a lifter be bad from the get go? Is this likely
at all, or is there something i've missed? I think it
is in the 1-3 cylinder bank, but i havn't had a good
place to work on my van since my move up to canada...
Thanks for any input. Aside from that, the van is
driving quite impressively. I took a trip down to
corvallis, OR over last weekend, and the van cruised
effortlessly anywhere from 65 to 85 (but typically
held near 75). The cool thing was the pull whenever i
wanted to pass someone. Go from 1/3 throttle to 2/3
throttle and *vroom* there you go! I never had to
floor it once :-)
Anyway, any help with the lifter thing would be cool
:-)
-Damon
