Subject: Removing front AC from 84 Vanagon - need some info
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Volks,

I am removing the AC from my 84 van before "retiring" it. I hope to put this unit in my 85 Westy or my Syncro in the future. (Could then put a sunroof or poptop on the Syncro and have AC. I have a few questions about this. I know very little about these AC systems.

I have removed all of the unit from the ceiling and the plastic housing that encased the hoses and wires on their route from the floor up to the unit. Drain hoses also pulled from holes. The system hasn't had freon in it in over 7 or more years and there is a leak on the high pressure hose about 1/4 of the way from the engine to the front of the van.

I have loosened the nuts holding the two hoses to the unit, but they didn't easily come out. I am hesitant to just yank hard as all is attached to that flimsy plastic shell. Any tricks or pointers here.

In addition there is a small metal tube that a sticker calls a MOSTAT capillary running from the front part of the unit thru the housing to the mid van part of the unit and then disappearing into the unit. My guess is that I don't want to cut this or break it, so is there some way to disconnect it for storing the unit until I can get around to installing it or selling it?

Any other useful tips as I go to remove the hoses and the wiring?

Thanks in advance.

Sam
