All good things to check. I had a similar problem and it was all of the above. Espicially the ground straps that are on the top driver's side of the engine which are prone to a bad connection and troubles and need to be cleaned occassionally. The one thing I'd add is after doing all the stuff Tim suggested, adjust the timing. I had several of the problems Tim spoke of and when repaired the idle still hunted a bit--not as bad--and the correct timing adjustment brought everything back to normal. This was all on my 1.9 liter watercooled engine by the way.
