Subject: Re: Power of a 2.0L Air cooled vs 2.1L???
Comments: To: "<Keith Hughes> DIGEST" <keithahughes@QWEST.NET>

Hi Keith, >>>(after a blown injector hose burned it to the ground)<<< well, that is a sad story.

>>>I tried Webers and DeLortos in place of the FI on the '78, but never could get better performance, and could not pass the emissions tests, so I went back to the Digifant.<<<<

That, i have to try myself! I also don't have to deal with emissions tests. You have more experience than me in regard of bus generation vs power, so i will take your words. But believe me, my 1.75L with slightly modified heads is pushing a lot, when i drive the 84 i don't feel much difference compare to my 73(not to say any). Anyway, am not trying to "bash" the Vanagon... at all. Am just trying to get the best of the 2 generations.

I really love the look of the Bay(even more the split), but i need more space, so i want to go with a 76-79. I want to stick to air-cool for one reason, simplicity and easy to work on, fewer parts.

I loved my 87 Vanagon, everyone knows that, but they can be costly and the engine is complex (cooling system). After a high mileage years (20k miles) in an air-cooled, i think i have enough experience to change a head in a campground. After struggling with mine for more than 15k miles, i finaly can cruise at 60 and see that head temp gage at 350F/ 200-220F oil.

>>>The WBX'er made it about 220K miles here in Phoenix, which is about twice the life expectancy of an air cooled<<< Well, i agree with you, the wasser is quite reliable (with proper maintenance), it as been to me and to the person i sold it too.

Am going the opposite way as you did, Vanagon, Bay and one day, a nice 66 split. :-)

I will see about FI, i have 2 complete FI in my garage so i have spare parts, i could consider staying with FI. But again, i like the carbs simplicity.

Peace, Ben (Still struggling with English...)
