As usual, there is no consensus, but at least there is civility, unlike other mail lists out there :-)

I guess the differing opinions are to be expected, and I really appreciated the detailed explanation from someone who has actually done it.

I just wanted to jump in and point out that a lot of people are not concerned with a Westy knock off when they are done, but instead are willing to accept a little bit less in the name of doing something fun, upgrading, and keeping the vehicles we work so hard to keep in shape. Not everyone has the same expectations, so its great that everyone points out the down side as well as the good stuff.

Given a decent poptop for a decent price, I would consider it, but my goal would be the pop top for standing room, and I wouldn't go the extra mile for the standard bed, as I don't need it, or care about resale. I would get a lot of good fun out of my present 81 if I could stand in it, and could store the junk "upstairs" so I could sleep and have room "downstairs" Not sure I want a full blown Westy with all the fixings, but the space afforded by a poptop would double the pleasure, and create more camping and outdoor opportunities for me and the one or two kids who might come along.

Just another POV on a great topic.

If there are too many vanagons in CA, send a westy to Utah and I will be happy to accept it :-)

John
