On my '75 bus I used it most of the time because I'm 6' tall, and the lower bed was a bit too short. The Vanagon's lower bed is bigger, though, so I end up using it more.

If you've just stopped to sleep after a long drive in hot weather, though, the upper bed can be nicer because the engine heat doesn't soak up into it like it does the lower bed. In cool weather the lower bed is nicer for exactly the same reason. ;)
