Subject: Engine replacement for 1990 Westfalia
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

My name is Dave and I'm new to this site. I recently bought a 1990 Vanagon Westfalia 2wd from the original owner. The van has roughly 152,000 miles and has never had the heads done - needless to say, it's time.

I plan to keep the camper for quite some time and want to discuss the pros and cons of replacing the engine with a rebuilt waterboxer or a TIICO conversion.

I've spoken with a TIICO authorized installer and have been told that shortly after the beginning of the year the conversion is being upgraded from the current 118 hp to 140hp. I'm also considering having the 5 speed transmission installed at the same time.

Has anyone done the TIICO conversion and what did you think of the results? Did you install the conversion yourself or have it done by a qualified shop? If you had it to do over again would you still go with the TIICO package or stay with the waterboxer?

Thanks for your feedback.
