I assume you mean 4 speed manual tranny. All of the waterboxer 2wd ones will interchange with no issues. All Vanagon manual trannys have a 2 or 3 letter code on the lower beveled edge, driver's side. These letters are followed by some numbers that tell the manufacturing date. There are 3 different codes found in North American waterboxer 2wd models and you can use any of them. The list of codes is on page 2 of the bentley, the place to find the code is on page 3.

DU, ABD, ACW All of these will work the same.

The 2wd codes you CAN'T use are (DM, DZ, DK, DX). OK, with enough modifications these could be used but are too much trouble for normal owners.
