Adding an aftermarket header exhaust system to the 2.0 can lead to a noticeable increase in power, provided everything else is in top shape.

I've found the ley to getting good performance out of the aircooled 2.0 is meticulous care of the fuel injection/ignition system. All components need to be in good working order, all grounds need to be good, and the whole deal needs to be regularly maintained. Plenty of 2 litres out there are being dissed for being slow, when really they are just poorly maintained. The good/bad thing about the aircooled 2 is that it will run badly forever if not cared for. It takes a ton of abuse to make them die completely, but only a bit of neglect to make them run poorly.
