Thanks for the responses.  It sounds like 'what ails it' would probably be
solved with a head change.  I've found a different mechanic that is much
more supportive and seems willing to work with a budget-challenged owner.
I'm very reluctant to let the current mechanic work on a 'lost cause'.

I still need a fuel pump relay, though.  Any possible sources out there?
