Skip,

If your van is a California model, I have a good used fuel pump relay (071 906 059A) for $15.00, or new for $37.49

If it's a 49 state, or Federal, version (071 906 059), I have new relays for $48.60

Cheers,

Jeff www.vanagonparts.com

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like 'what ails it' would probably be solved with a head change. I've found a different mechanic that is much more supportive and seems willing to work with a budget-challenged owner. I'm very reluctant to let the current mechanic work on a 'lost cause'.

I still need a fuel pump relay, though. Any possible sources out there?

Thanks again,

BTW, I'm mildly mechanically-inclined, but certainly no mechanic.
