Aha! A bit of cultural misunderstanding.

Having never lived in an urban center so dense that I didn't have parking at my house, I assumed when you said "I pick[ed] up my ... Vanagon ... from the garage", that you meant a mechanic's garage/shop.

Again, sorry for your loss, and I'll have to double-check my fuel lines. AND my fire extinguisher!
