--- I think the flat 4 doesn't really *need* lots of flexible hose... That's just the way the lazy VW engineers chose to do it.

On the subaru, the injectors live inside a metal housing and are sealed by o-rings. Most of the fuel plumbing is steel tubing and sealed by o-ringed, flanged connections. It makes for a pretty leak resistant system with only 3 rubber fuel hoses in the engine compartment. There's one high pressure hose from the chassis to the engine, one low pressure (return) hose from the engine back to the chassis, and one short (4") hose on the low pressure return side of the fuel pressure regulator.

It's a pretty sanitary system really, unlike the crazy maze of rubber hose and connections that VW chose to use.
