There is a bit of movement possible with the floating part of the hinge -
the other half is welded (I think) to the body or door.  In the olden days
shims were placed under the lower hinge to pivot the door and raise the far
end up, although that may not be possible with Vanagons.  I bought new
hinges for my van years ago and have yet to need them - there is a plastic
bushing inside that is TOUGH.
