Ric,

I helped a fellow westy owner here in Rochester with the similar problems. We tried everything and even put on my DigiTool to diagnose.

Nothing helped.

We finally threw in the towel and took it to one of the few shops that know what a VW and a Vanagon is.

The guy replaced the O2 sensor and it worked wonderfully. Eventhough the O2 sensor readings were OK on the Digitool.

Go with the O2 sensor. The only pain is in removing your old one and splicing the wires if you buy the Ford sensor from one of the List vendors.

Cheers and stay warm
