From all my reading of the posts on this list, it appears the colletive wisdon of the list is that the automatic in the Vanagons is stronger than the manual tranny. Will give less trouble over time, and is very reliable when properly maintained. A plus to the auto tranny is, if you are reasonably proficient with hand tools, and have some mechanical ability, you can rework the auto tranny in your home garage, whereas with a manual tranning you cannot, due to the manual tranny requiring special jigs to set up all the gearing inside.

Best of luck.
