I think a 1.9L turbodiesel might be competitive with a wasserboxer in horsepower, but I'm not sure. If you put one in, you also have to swap in a gasoline transmission if you want better top speed. The 65 mph top speed of a stock diesel Vanagon is set by the engine redline of 4800 rpm.
