I could see them being handy as a 'rear fog light' for poor visibility conditions, though. My 240 has a pair of rear fogs that are switched by a switch on the dash. I run with them off except in heavy fog or snow, for the reasons you note. I think the biggest safety upgrade for my Vanagon would be a third brake light. I have a line of super-bright red LEDs wired up that I plan to mount on the rear shelf. While I was at it I made little yellow LED chevrons that I'll wire as auxiliary turn signals.
