Bear in mind that some of this varies by market, and is generally based on production date rather than the year on the title. The change to square headlights occurred during 1985, but not on Vanagons sold as '85 models in the U.S.. A more extreme example is the changeover from aircooled to watercooled. In many parts of the world all 1983 Vanagons were watercooled (and even some '82's for that matter). But in the U.S. VW marketed aircooled Vanagons well into the "1983 model year." So the info may be erroneous for the U.S. market, but not completely incorrect on a global basis.
