Scott, I had been fighting the same problem on my '84 until last July, when I decided to fix it right. I bought a rebuilt 1.9L from Boston Bob, all the trimmings from Ken Wilford, and four gallons of Autobahn coolant from my local VW dealer. Did the entire job myself in my driveway as I couldn't find any shop in Middle GA that would touch a water-cooled vanagon. By the way, I am no mechanic. I hadn't even done my own tune-ups before. In any case, all the coolant system problems of the past have gone away.
