The answer isn't german engineering, but rather the fact that blue LED's
were a very rare and expensive item in the mid 80's.


The bulb can be replaced with a blue LED if you like.
(now that blue LED's are *cheaper* than light bulbs)
Put a resistor in series to limit the current. Somewhere
around 2200 ohms would probably be fine. Less resistance
to make it brighter, more to make it dimmer...
