Howdy All, I'm very proud to announce that my '87 Vanagon GL project has made a major step toward completion. On Tuesday, December 30, 2003, I was able to drive my Vanagon, powered by a newly installed '87 Porsche 911 Carrera engine and G50 transmission, on the streets. It went well for a first drive. No major surprises. The engine does need a top end rebuild (it has a couple of broken head studs), but I knew this before installation (the resulting exhaust leak from one cylinder was just a bit worse than I had expected). Right now I'm planning on removing the engine this coming Sunday so it can be sent to one of the top Porsche shops in the region for new head studs (all the way around), new rings, new rod bearings, rod nuts, rod bolts, and some head work. Yes, the van was a blast to drive, even though the broken studs forced me to take it easy on the throttle. I still have a few details to work out, but overall, things went very well. I plan on having a web site set up shortly. Cheers For The New Year!
