The snorkel set-up also allows the air cleaner to get cleaner air (from up high) than it would if it took the air from the engine compartment, as the wheels kick up a lot of dust (on back roads). No special air filter, just the filter in the air-cleaner box (try a good K&N filter). The 'cyclone' filter acts as a pre filter for large stuff and water. Re rivers, the exhaust will blow water out, but sucking water in the intake will blow heads as the water will not compact in the cylindars. Regular diesels work better in wet conditions (river crossings) as there is no elect to the non-existent spark plugs to short out (TDIs may short out). That's what I know about this topic.
