Actually, if you had a hole in the cap the system wouldn't pressurize, and you'd get almost nothing out of it. I once drove about 20 miles with my expansion tank cap loose before I figured out why I was running slightly warmer than usual. I lost maybe a cup of coolant, just what thermal expansion pushed out the top. Unlike the radiator there's no flow in this location to create dynamic pressure.
