Subject: new listee - new van - oil pressure on TD
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hello all,

Happy New Year! I'm back after a few years' absence. Great to see the list is still in such good shape! Owned a T4 Westy in the meantime but sold it - it just isn't the same as a Vanagon...

Now I'm about to get a Westfalia Club Joker (poptop camper) here in Holland that has a (stock) 1.6 TD engine and around 250000 km. The engine was replaced with another used engine about 50000 kms ago, so it's probably not too good. The asking price is ok though so I'm factoring in repairs or even a replacement. The body is good and so is the interior (velour seats, nice front seats with integrated headreasts).

I can hear a CV joint knocking when putting on the 'power' in a right-hand corner so that probably needs replacing. The car doesn't quite reach the same top speed as my previous TD: that did 130 km/h, this one struggles to reach 125 (speedo reading).

The only thing that really worries me a bit is that after a cold start (just above freezing), it takes a few seconds and a dab on the accelerator for the oil pressure light to go out. I'm used to this for the alternator but not for the oil light... Anyone with experience of this on a diesel? What should I check/suspect first, assuming the oil is at the right level? Oil pump? Big end?

Thanks for any pointers!
