Hi All! and especially fellow Canadians!
I have read a lot about this, but still 2 things are not too clear to me
(those are more related to delivering the van rather than importing it):
-if I want to drive it from the US to Canada, how is the procedure?
I need a plate and insurance. This seems impossible to get for a
Canadian, isn't?
##### You have to get insurance and a temp permit from that state and drive
it to the boarder. US and Canadian insurance is valid throughout Canada and
the USA.
- if the owner offers to drive it up North. That is solved.
But when and where must the title transfer be done?
Up to the customs, that fine. that is his vehicle. and he is insured for it.
Once at the custom. I must transfer it. Can we do that at the customs?
Should not we need a DMV for that?
##### You need to take it to Canada Customs first and pay the duty on it.
Then you have to get a *federal* inspection done to it, this is done by
Canadian Tire. They make sure the US Market vehicle conforms to all
Canadian standards at that time (DTRL, child restraint systems etc). Then
you need your provincial inspection and then you register it in Canada.
I read that I need to present my title of property, etc. So I must have
been through the seller's DMV first.
If so, the van is mine. But can it be plated and insured for the trip
then? In whose's name?
I do not know what to think. What are the best way to do this?
Does anyone has some experience with this?
##### Just drive it to Canada Customs with US insurance on it. Remember as
soon as you cross the boarder it doesn't expire! It's not a big deal. Been
there done this more than a few times!
Am I going to rent a trailer and a pick-up to do this?
