Art,

I agree with Tim, no growl in my 84 w 175k or my 85 with 174k - this one is new to me 15k ago, but none of the bills I have from the previous 3 owners and about 70k+ miles or more shows any tranny work.

Maybe you don't need a new tranny, but you need to find someone who can ID the noises and determine why they have started and how to fix it.

I'd also go for another opinion from a SF area mechanic recommended by some of the list members.
