If you are wrestling with this thing out of the car and not mounted to a stand, you might want to rig up some type of deadman so that you can get the most out of the force you are applying to the wrench. If you have enough air, use a large impact driver. Even if the crank is not locked down solid, the pneumatic impact driver should eventually spin the bolt out. No air? Beg, borrow, steal or devise a slugging wrench. Got money? There is at least one VW specialist offering a geared torque multiplier specifically designed for the few jumbo sized fasteners found on VW's. These things used to be advertised in "Hot VW's and . . ." almost monthly.
