Volks,

This may be more than most want to know, but I found it and will pass it on. I remember from archive searches and pmails that some of the most knowledgeable folks on the list have said many times that all of the transaxles discussed below are interchangeable.

According to Bentley, p. 2, the DU and ABD 4 speed 091/1 transaxles were used in the 1.9l Vanagons. The ABD and ACW 4 speed 091/1 transaxles were used in the 2.1l Vanagons. Apparently there were some ABDs in both models.

On page 34.9 there is a small table giving the complete ratios for the both the DU and ABD 091/1 transaxles with a subheading of 1985 MY vanagons. All ratios are the same except that there is a tiny difference in the third gear ratio changing from 1.26 in the older DU transaxle to 1.225 for the newer ABD. All other individual gear ratios are the same. The final drive ratio for the older DU is 4.86, while that for the newer ABD is 4.83. The same data is found for these two transaxles on p. 35.32. The gear and final drive ratios for the ACW are found on p. 35.33 and are the same as the ABD.

So, it seems that some 1985's had a ABD transaxle with the same ratios as were standard for all 1986 and later 091/1 equipped Vanagons whether they had an ABD or an ACW transaxle. Maybe this is like some of the other changes that were standard 1986 MY and later which began being slipped into the 1985 models.

I remember reading this stuff when contemplating replacing the tranny in the 85 I bought - turned out to be a bad CV joint, and before I sold an 84 to someone who wanted it to put into an 87. So I looked it back up and here it is FWIW.

Sam
