During the time I was guarding the country, I spent some time at the Arctic Test Board and the NWTC at Ft. Greely AK. (Recently re-commissioned I understand). A test process involved "cold-soaking" at various low temperatures. Tok Junction, where we often met on "road trips" achieved notariety by logging -72F actual. In my non-cheechako opinion, after -30F it doesn't seem "colder" you just get cold faster. Gotta love them Vapor Barrier Boots, Oil, Engine, Sub-zero and the Winter grade diesel that doesn't precipitate parrafine when chilled. I would drain the aircooled VW motor oil each night, plug in the pan heater, tote the oil inside and in the morning just warm it up and put it back in, trying to remember to unplug the heater before heading off to harass the day. An unlimited supply of quickstart was available (ether based starting fluid) so getting on the road with a POV was only a 30 minute job.
